When people think Blue Mountains in autumn, they think Katoomba. But locals know better — Leura is where the real show happens. The village sits slightly lower on the escarpment than Blackheath, which means its European trees — maples, oaks, and liquid ambers — hold their colour longer and burn more intensely. For two to three weeks each April and May, Leura becomes one of the most photographed villages in Australia.
This guide covers the best spots, exact timing, autumn walks, and where to base yourself to make the most of the season.
For the bigger picture beyond autumn — every walk, garden, cafe, and the practical Leura survival kit — see our Local’s Guide to Leura, Blue Mountains: 21 things to do across all four seasons.

Visiting Leura for autumn? Magnolia Cottage is walking distance from the Mall and 5 minutes from Everglades.
When to Visit for Peak Colour
The autumn colour season in Leura typically runs from early April through late May, with distinct phases:
- Early April: Hints of gold begin to appear, especially in Blackheath’s high-altitude gardens. Leura is still mostly green but the change is coming.
- Late April – Early May: Peak “fire” colours in Leura — the Mall and Everglades are ablaze with orange, red, and gold. This is the sweet spot for photography and the week most people aim for.
- Mid to Late May: The “crunchy leaf” phase — carpets of fallen leaves line the streets and paths. Less dramatic than peak colour but beautiful in its own way, and far less crowded.
Tip: Blackheath (10 minutes further up the mountain) peaks about a week earlier than Leura due to its higher altitude. Visit Blackheath in mid-April, then Leura a week or two later for a double-hit of colour.
Leura’s Best Autumn Spots
Leura is the heart of the “Garden Village.” Here are the five spots not to miss:
- Leura Mall: The iconic main street is lined with cherry blossom trees that turn a deep, rusty orange in autumn. Grab a coffee at Wayzgoose Cafe or Leura Garage and stroll the full length — it takes about 20 minutes and is utterly beautiful.
- Everglades House & Gardens: This National Trust-listed Art Deco masterpiece is the crown jewel of Leura’s autumn. The tiered gardens offer panoramic views of the Jamison Valley framed by blazing maples. Entry is $15 for adults. Open daily.
- Leuralla NSW Toy & Railway Museum: Less visited than Everglades but with equally spectacular grounds. The private garden here is one of the best-kept autumn secrets in the village — liquid ambers and Japanese maples in full colour, often without the crowds.
- The Hidden Backstreets: Wander down Gladstone Road and Malvern Road. The private gardens along these streets are often more spectacular than the public parks, and you’ll have the footpath almost to yourself.
- Sublime Point Lookout: A 10-minute drive from Leura Mall, this lesser-visited lookout offers dramatic views of the Jamison Valley with a foreground of golden tree canopy. Spectacular in the late afternoon light of autumn.

Best Walks for Autumn Colour
Unlike summer when bush tracks are the main draw, autumn in Leura is as much about the village walks as the national park. Here are three walks worth doing:
- Leura Mall to Leuralla (30 min, easy): Start at the top of the Mall, walk down to the end, turn into Olympian Parade and follow it to Leuralla Road. The private gardens along this route are extraordinary in autumn. Flat, easy, and perfect for all ages.
- Leura Cascades to Katoomba Falls (2 hrs, easy–moderate): Pick up the track at the Leura Cascades picnic area. The cliff-top path gives you views of autumn canopy stretching across the valley. Waterfalls run strongly in autumn after early rains. Return the same way or loop back via the Prince Henry Cliff Walk.
- Sublime Point Loop (1.5 hrs, moderate): From Sublime Point Road, this loop track takes you along the cliff edge with continuous views of the Jamison Valley. The mix of golden deciduous trees in the village above and the evergreen eucalypt valley below is unique to this time of year.
Discover Blackheath: The High-Altitude Hidden Gem
If you prefer a quieter, more local feel, Blackheath is a serene alternative just 10 minutes further up the mountain. It hits peak colour slightly earlier than Leura and feels like a true alpine escape — pair both villages for a full autumn day out.
- Campbell Rhododendron Gardens: Famous for spring blooms, but the “Maple Walk” here is one of the best-kept autumn secrets in the region. Free entry.
- Govetts Leap: Experience the contrast of golden deciduous trees against the deep blue haze of the Grose Valley — one of the most photographed views in the Blue Mountains in autumn.
- Local Dining: Warm up with a post-walk meal at Blaq or Ates — both are excellent and worth booking ahead on autumn weekends. If you walked the Grand Canyon Track nearby, this is the perfect place to end the day.

What to Expect
Autumn in Leura brings a pleasant chill, making it ideal for exploring on foot. Daytime temperatures range from the low to high teens Celsius; evenings can drop to 5°C or below, so pack layers. Mornings are often misty — this adds atmosphere to the gardens and lookouts and makes for excellent photography. By midday the skies usually clear.
Weekends in late April and early May can be busy, particularly around Everglades and the Mall. Visit on a weekday if you can for a more relaxed experience. Mid-week visits during peak colour season are often the sweet spot for both colour intensity and crowd size.
Beyond the leaves, autumn is a great time to explore local art galleries, browse the boutique shops along the Mall, and settle into one of Leura’s excellent cafes with a long lunch. The pace of the village slows beautifully in autumn.
Where to Stay for Autumn in Leura
To make the most of Leura’s autumn, staying in the village itself is the obvious choice — you can walk to the Mall and Everglades without needing a car.
