Most spring guides to the Blue Mountains will tell you to visit the gardens. Useful, but it skips the question people actually have when they’re booking: what will be in flower the weekend I’m there?
Spring here isn’t one event. It’s a slow wave that starts in the lower villages in late August and finishes in Blackheath in mid-November, and depending on which week you come, you’ll get magnolias, cherry blossoms, tulips, rhododendrons or waratahs — rarely all at once.
This guide is a bloom calendar first and a things-to-do list second. It covers what’s flowering when, where to go for it, the confirmed 2026 festival dates, and the spring walks worth doing.

The one thing to understand: spring climbs the mountain
The Blue Mountains villages sit at different altitudes, and that changes everything about timing.

Higher means colder, and colder means later. The practical upshot: spring lasts about six weeks longer here than it does anywhere at sea level, because you can chase it up the hill.
If you arrive in Leura and the cherry blossoms have already dropped, drive ten minutes to Blackheath — you’re often a full week or two behind up there, and the show is still going. This is also why Leura holds its garden festival in early October and Blackheath waits until November for its rhododendrons. Same season, different clocks.

The bloom calendar
Late August – early September: magnolias
The first real signal. Magnolias open before their leaves come in, so they read as pure colour against bare branches — big waxy pink and cream blooms on otherwise empty trees. Leura’s back streets are full of them, and there are several mature specimens on the Magnolia Cottage block itself.
Where: Gladstone Road and Malvern Road in Leura, and throughout the village’s private gardens. Best appreciated on foot.
Mid September – early October: cherry blossoms
The main event, and the shortest window. Leura Mall’s avenue of Japanese cherries usually peaks somewhere between mid-September and the October long weekend, depending on the winter that preceded it. A warm week brings it forward; a cold snap or hard rain can strip it in two days.
Because the window is narrow and weather-dependent, treat any specific date as a guess. Mid-to-late September is the safest bet. If you’re planning a trip around the blossoms, build in a backup: Blackheath’s blossoms run a week or two behind Leura’s.
Where: Leura Mall, end to end — about 500 m, twenty minutes at a stroll. Early morning is best for photographs and parking both.
October: tulips, bluebells and the garden festival
Peak garden month. The cool-climate bulbs — tulips, bluebells, peonies — come through in the private gardens, and this is when they open to the public. Rhododendrons and azaleas begin in Leura and build through the month.
Late September – November: rhododendrons and azaleas
The longest season of the lot, and the reason Blackheath gets the last word on spring. Campbell Rhododendron Gardens holds over 2,000 rhododendrons across 18 hectares, planted among native eucalypts — an odd and beautiful combination you don’t see much elsewhere. Peak is October into November.
Where: Campbell Rhododendron Gardens, Blackheath (free entry). The Lodge Rhodo Tea Room opens through the peak weeks.
September – December: the other spring
While the exotic gardens are doing their thing, the bushland runs a completely separate season that most visitors miss entirely.
- Waratahs — the big one. Flowers for roughly two months only, September and October. Nothing else in the Australian bush looks like it.
- Flannel flowers — soft white, felt-textured, flourishing in spring against the grey-green scrub.
- Mountain devils, native peas, boronias and mint bushes — yellow, red, pink and purple through the understorey from September onwards.
Where: the Lockleys Pylon track near Leura is the pick — heath country with long Grose Valley views, and good for waratahs and mountain devils. Any of the cliff-top tracks will show you something.
This is the half of spring that costs nothing and has no opening hours. If the gardens are booked out or the weather turns, this is where to go.
Spring events in the Blue Mountains: 2026 dates
Leura Gardens Festival — Friday 2 to Monday 5 October 2026. 9.30am–4.30pm daily. Eight private gardens open across Leura, Wentworth Falls and Katoomba, with a hop-on-hop-off bus running from Leura Station every 20–30 minutes. Tickets go on sale 1 September on the festival website and are valid for the full four days. Proceeds support the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital. Note that this lands on the October long weekend (Labour Day, Monday 5 October) — accommodation across the upper mountains books out well ahead.
Blackheath Rhododendron Festival — first weekend of November 2026. Village festival with the Grand Parade, market stalls, the Rhodo Revue and entertainment through the week. Campbell Rhododendron Gardens is the centrepiece and is open throughout.
Everglades Spring Fest, Leura. The National Trust runs a spring program at Everglades each year alongside the garden festival. Check the National Trust website for current dates.

Best spring walks
Spring rain keeps the waterfalls running and the tracks green, and the temperature is close to ideal for walking — warm enough to start early, cool enough not to suffer.
Prince Henry Cliff Walk (Leura to Katoomba) — 7 km one way, easy–moderate. Cliff-edge the whole way, linking Leura Cascades, Gordon Falls, Elysian Rock and Echo Point. Native flowering shrubs line long stretches of it in spring.
Leura Cascades & Fern Bower Circuit — 1 km loop, easy, 30 minutes. Tree ferns and tiered cascades, running hard after spring rain. The most accessible good walk in the area.
Lockleys Pylon — 6 km return, moderate. The wildflower walk. Open heath, Grose Valley views, waratahs and mountain devils in season. Fewer people than anything closer to the villages.
Wentworth Falls / National Pass — 4.5 km loop, hard. Cut into the cliff face by hand in 1908. Spectacular in spring when the falls are at volume. Not for anyone uneasy with exposure.
Grand Cliff Top Walk — the upgraded 19 km route linking Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba. Walk it in sections; the Leura–Katoomba stretch is the easiest to do as a half day. For a harder Blackheath option, see our Grand Canyon Track guide.

Leura runs 5–10°C cooler than Sydney year-round, and the mountains make their own weather — a clear Sydney morning can be a misty valley afternoon. Layers, a proper rain jacket, and shoes with grip. Mornings in September are genuinely cold.
Rain isn’t a write-off: the waterfalls are better for it and the mist through the gardens is the reason half the good photographs of this place exist. If it settles in, here are things to do on a rainy day.
Planning notes
- Book early for the October long weekend. Garden festival plus Labour Day plus school holidays is the busiest weekend of the season.
- NSW spring school holidays run 28 September – 9 October 2026 and overlap the festival almost exactly.
- Weekdays are a different experience. Mid-week in peak bloom gives you the same flowers and a fraction of the people.
- Arrive before 10am on spring weekends if you’re driving — Leura Mall parking fills.
- Check NPWS alerts for track closures after heavy rain.
Where to stay
Staying in Leura itself means the Mall, Everglades and the cliff-top walks are all reachable on foot — which matters more than usual on festival weekends, when parking is the main friction.
Magnolia Cottage is a self-contained cottage on a 2,200m² block in the heart of Leura, sleeping four. Walking distance to the Mall, five minutes to Everglades, and with its own mature magnolias that open in late August. Fireplace and firepit for the cold spring evenings, which arrive whether or not the days are warm.

Mid-September to mid-October covers the most — cherry blossoms in Leura, the start of the rhododendrons, waratahs in the bush, and the Leura Gardens Festival. If you specifically want rhododendrons, come to Blackheath in late October or November instead.

Can I visit the Blue Mountains in spring without a car?
Yes. The Blue Mountains Line runs from Central to Leura Station, and the Mall, the cherry blossom avenue and Everglades are all walkable from there. The Gardens Festival runs a shuttle bus from Leura Station. For Lockleys Pylon and Sublime Point you’ll want a car or a taxi.
